Real Power by Rev. Stephen Schuette, posted February 7, 2007
My sympathies to all the true Bears fans. It was still close until the 4th Quarter, in spite of playing poorly. Someone said to me that for most of the game the Colts had more in time of possession than the Bears had gained in yards. So I have heard the often-repeated lines: “There’s always next year.” (I’m not sure Chicagoans are aware how often they say that!)
Even the commercials were ho-hum….except for one. I wonder if you saw the Doritos spot? If not, you can go to http://promotions.yahoo.com/doritos/jumpcut/# and click on “Live the Flavor” (The marvels of the internet!! I think you have to manually paste the link into explorer. If you just click on it, you're simply directed to Yahoo.). The background is that the spot was created in a few days, for a budget of $12 spent on bags of Doritos, using a handheld camera conveyed by roller blades. And the girl’s fall had to be done in one take because when she fell the first time she hit her head on the car, hard.
Every sports fan loves an underdog story. This may be the true sports story of the Super Bowl.
It also reminds me of the Church. For the most part our productions are low-cost. Chicken and jello will always be the mainstay at a church pot luck. We’re in awe of our new color printer. The bell choir this evening isn’t breaking any traditions. They’re practicing “Blessed Assurance.”
And yet there is a power in our words, our message, our sense of community that goes well beyond the
“production” value. It is deep and
sincere and genuine…and in its own way powerful beyond anything imagined on
A devotional book I have sometimes used through years (God Calling Journal) says,
There will be no limit
to what you can accomplish. Realize
that. Never relinquish any task or give
up the thought of any task because it seems beyond your power… Think of the tiny snowdrop-shoot in the hard
ground. No certainty even that when it
has forced its weary way up, sunlight and warmth will greet it. What a task beyond its power that must
seem. But with the inner urge of Life within the seed
compelling it, it carries out that task.
The
God’s blessing in your tasks this day! Remember, there is no limit to what you can accomplish.
